More weekend bicycle usage

On Sunday Meghan and I finally took her bicycle out for a spin.  After walking the bicycles the three quarters of a mile to the trail, as Meghan didn’t want to ride yet as it’s been years since she rode a bicycle and she “didn’t want to hit a car and die”.  Once she was comfortable with her balance and starting/stopping ability, we began heading down the trail.  It didn’t take long for her to gain her confidence and enjoy the ride.  We eventually went 4.5 miles down the trail before heading back the way we came.  Overall, the total trip was just under 10 miles, as we rode back home from the trail.

All in all, Sunday was enjoyable.  After the bicycle trip, we had breakfast at Kermit’s, walked to campus to feed her animals, and came back home, at which point I took a nap.  Later we went to Grounds For Thought to play some Ticket to Ride Switzerland.

Reading all your biking posts, I really wish people weren’t crazy in cars in Providence… and that there wasn’t a valley between home and work. I can’t wear shorts or comfortable clothes to work, otherwise, I’d bike it (to avoid the crazy 4 lane road, my trip would be extended by about a mile and include an even steeper hill). It must be nice living in a very flat town. :) We’re looking at buying a house closer to where I work (she’ll still have to take the bus, but I’ll be able to walk or bike to work).

I’m certainly saying that the people in BG aren’t crazy in their cars, that’s for sure; my wife has plenty of stories about getting nearly hit or getting the “evil eye” while walking.

Fortunately, the weather hasn’t turned warm enough yet that I need to consider biking to work in different clothing and changing once I get in. Even so, when it does get warm, the flatness of BG means I’m not working up as much of a sweat.

Chances are that when we move, the proximity of our domicile to where we work, get groceries, take recyclables (if no pick up is available), and go out to eat will definitely be taken into account.
