Reading material for World Enviroment Day

June 5th is World Environment Day, so please read over the alphabetical list of 80 things you can celebrate WED, which can be found at http://www.unep.org/wed/2008/english/Information_Material/alphabet.asp.

The slogan for this WED is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Encomony.

If you need some convincing, according to a national survey conducted by Kelton Research in the US for GM (which explains the focus on cars) found that, and as listed on Treehugger:

  • Fuel- efficient — The new chick magnet? “Close to nine in 10 women (88 percent) say they’d rather chat up someone with the latest fuel-efficient car versus the latest sports car.”
  • How to win friends and influence people. “Eighty percent of American car buyers would find someone with the latest model fuel-efficient car more interesting to talk to at a party than someone with the latest model sports car.”
  • Not green? That’s a fashion don’t. “More than four out of 10 (45 percent) 18-43 year-olds say it’s a fashion faux-pas nowadays to have a car that is not green or environmentally friendly.”

Pork and Beans

Saw this posted on my guild forum the other day and enjoyed watching it. I particularly like the Internet/pop culture references. Be sure to check out the wiki article and see how many of them you knew; I was able to notice over half.

More weekend bicycle usage

On Sunday Meghan and I finally took her bicycle out for a spin.  After walking the bicycles the three quarters of a mile to the trail, as Meghan didn’t want to ride yet as it’s been years since she rode a bicycle and she “didn’t want to hit a car and die”.  Once she was comfortable with her balance and starting/stopping ability, we began heading down the trail.  It didn’t take long for her to gain her confidence and enjoy the ride.  We eventually went 4.5 miles down the trail before heading back the way we came.  Overall, the total trip was just under 10 miles, as we rode back home from the trail.

All in all, Sunday was enjoyable.  After the bicycle trip, we had breakfast at Kermit’s, walked to campus to feed her animals, and came back home, at which point I took a nap.  Later we went to Grounds For Thought to play some Ticket to Ride Switzerland.

Two weeks and a weekend of bicycle usage

About two weeks ago, my bicycle was ready for me at Cycle Werks following its tune-up, and as I had said I was going to, I purchased a rear rack and an attachable grocery bag for the rack.  I’ve been using the bag to carry any food, drink, or other items to work, all of a mile away.  The added benefit of the bicycle over walking is that it still makes the apartment very accessible, time-wise, if I want to leave the office for lunch, as I did on Friday.  It also allows me to get to a majority of places in BG during lunch without having to drive, as I did on Wednesday when I went to GFT to get a coffee and a second lunch (the first lunch was eaten about 2 hours earlier due to me not eating breakfast) while reading, and on Thursday when I went to Uraku for sushi and some reading.

Today I finally took the bicycle out to take care of some weekend chores.  I loaded up the grocery bag with some old phone books, some cardboard, and paper that didn’t need to be shredded and took a trip to the recycling center, which was a trip of about 1.6 miles.  From there, I went to the Farmer’s Market at the mall, which brought me to a trip of 3.15, but sadly, there was nothing of note to purchase this weekend.  Eventually there will be more as items come into season, but so it goes.    I then came back home for a total trip of 5.36 miles.  I’m particularly glad that I was able to make the trip and not get winded, as it means I’m in a little bit better shape than I thought I might be.  Sure, my legs are tired, but that’s the way it goes.

On an unrelated note, I finally got up to 24 bags knocked down on the boxing portion of Wii Sports.  My record for a while was 19, which I was able to get or just be 1 shy of, but I finally got 20 and then 24 before I decided I was finished playing.  About an hour later, I realized that I was rather sore from doing that, but then again, I did play about 15 rounds of it, and before hand I took on the computer in a boxing match (we tied).  I’m trying to get myself in the habit of using the Wii more often to see if I can justify the purchase of Wii Fit.
