BGSU made Slashdot

Thanks to Jim for pointing it out, as I could have missed it today, but BGSU made Slashdot.  The reason is that some students were arrested for possessing Nerf guns in 2006 while on campus for a game of Humans vs. Zombies.  While that issue has been cleared up, BGSU policy at the time (and probably still) dictates that weapons or facsimiles of weapons are not allowed on campus.

Help Fund the Wintergarden Park Expansion

Wintergarden Park in Bowling Green, OH could use your help!

My Hometown Helper is a site put together by Hamburger Helper to help fund groups and organizations who are attempting to improve their community. One such project is done by the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation to request money to help pay off the purchase of land adjacent to the Wintergarden Park. 20 acres of land was to be used for the building of 60 homes, but this would have then caused issues for the park. Fortunately, an organization was able to raise money and purchase the land from the developers. Now the loan needs to get paid back.

The way things are going these days, I see no reason to build even more homes, especially if it means destroying green space in the process, and adding more green space to an existing park is a great idea. If you live in Bowling Green, or otherwise make use of Wintergarden Park, please consider visiting the project page and give your reason for why you feel this is deserving of funding.

My comment was simple:

Wintergarden is a great place to visit for animal watching and taking photographs; being able to watch the seasons progress is amazing. By having this green space, and expanding upon it, everyone can benefit.

My wife had the following to say:

Adding 20 acres to Wintergarden Park may attract new animals to the park and thus will not just increase the number of animals, but possibly the type of animals that would be able to live in Bowling Green or stop here during migration. By supporting biodiversity, the additional acres would also provide additional opportunities for wildlife education and enjoyment.

So please, visit the project at http://myhometownhelper.com/ViewProject.aspx?id=37367 and leave your comment as to why this project should get some funding assistance from Hamburger Helper.

Tributes to Gygax

A number of sites online have done tributes to Gygax, and here’s a couple of them. Also, due to size limitations, just click on the image to see the full size image.

Order of the Stick is a webcomic about a adventuring group of, well, stick figures, and is based heavily on D&D. Comic #536 was a tribute to Gygax, and it’s ironic that the main hero of the story is in the afterlife at this point.

Penny Arcade of course is mainly about video games, but they do reference table-top gaming quite frequently. Their tribute was a very simple piece.

Full Frontal Nerdity is practically all about table-top gaming. The FFN tribute was a bit more humorous, but was still tasteful.

Then there’s the comic that is full of dark humor, Something Positive. A handful of the characters have gaming as a part of their background. I’m sure that the character’s (Mike) reaction shown here is similar to many a fanboy after hearing the news.

So that’s all for now. A couple of other comics I read just haven’t put up anything yet, but I expect they will, as they are also influenced but Gygax’s work.

Since my brother mentioned it on my Facebook, here’s a picture of Al Gore and his Time Rangers, which Gygax was a part of.

The passing of Gary Gygax

I won’t lie; part of the reason I’m writing a post at this point in time is because my brother posted the following to my Facebook…

I am outraged, OUTRAGED that you have not blogged about Gygax yet.

Gary Gygax died at the age of 69 today. He was co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, but is more commonly seen as it’s father, and without D&D, the RPG genre would be in a much different state than it is today, if it even existed. What else there to say beyond that? It’s Gygax we’re talking about here. Toklien can be one of the top driving influences for fantasy literature, and he and those that came after gave us far-away places to read about and pretend you were the hero, but Gygax made it so not only could you go to those far-away places, but you were controlling what happened.

I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else.

The truth about reparing computers

While perusing the Consumerist, I came across the following quote:

Drive past the big box stores when your computer breaks. Their employees are trained to upsell, not repair computers. Instead, seek out the young, the ones who aren’t old enough to hold advanced degrees or a driver’s license—those who can be paid with extended curfews are ideal. Then, watch in amazement as they sprightly get your computer back to checking AOL so you can forward us that hilarious email Snopes disproved last year.

Isn’t that the truth? Read the article here.
