Thunderbird and other people’s e-mail clients

If you are like me, you use Thunderbird as your work e-mail client. Depending on where you work, this probably isn’t the e-mail client that other people use, such as at Bowling Green State University, where we use Eudora. When I was a student, I wasn’t very impressed with it, and that lack-of-impression continued when I became employed post-graduation. I tried Outlook, but then switched over to Thunderbird.

However, Thunderbird supposedly follows the Internet standard of, for English users, formatting a forwarded message as [FWD: original message subject line]. What this means is that when people try and sort their e-mail via subject line to see if the e-mail was forwarded on, it won’t show up.

A quick Google found remove [] in forwarded message on the mozillaZine forum, which includes a link to the download for Edit Thunderbird Forward. All you do is download it, unpack it to a folder, make sure Thunderbird is closed, and run the executable. Now when you forward an e-mail, it doesn’t use the brackets, which makes people (like your boss) happy.

The program changes the program code, so if you ever need/want the brackets back, just reinstall Thunderbird. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is something that needs to be done after a major/minor upgrade.

Random Readings

Here’s a list of things that have caught my eye the last couple days but that I failed to comment/post about.

  • LEGO differential engine - this is neat, but this reminds me of a related item, which follows.
  • Wikipedia: January 8th - a list of things, births, and deaths that happened on January 8th. The reason this relates to the difference engine is that the difference engine is a form of early computing technology and one of the original deigners of the ENIAC died the day I was born.
  • The State of the Blogosphere - interesting read
  • We are all Danes now - one of many articles I could have selected about this weekend’s events concerning illustrations/cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper.
  • A social analysis of tagging - just what it says.

The other thing I’ve been doing, as stated two posts ago, is changing webhosts. I’m currently also looking at unix space at aplus.net, as the deal they offer seems too good to be true. And thus I am making sure there isn’t some catch.

Friends and cancer

I was just informed by my mom that Kevin’s older brother Keith has cancer. Kevin and I have known each other since 1st grade. His older brother Keith was in the grade ahead of us and knew my friends Chris and Andy.

I’ll be keeping Kevin, Keith, and their mom in my thoughts.

Unfortunately, Kevin and I haven’t been as close in recent years. I should probably try to do something to remedy that.
